How to Decorate a Cake

Vintage cake decorationVintage cake decoration

I’m a giant fan of giant flea markets (Giants fleas are obviously better value for money than little fleas…) and I love the variety of things you can find in among the stalls. Recently I picked up a ‘Tala’ Icing pen at one stall then towards the end of the day the accompanying guide explaining ‘How to Decorate a Cake’ (all for the bargain price of £4 thanks to some haggling) just looking at the amount of icing on some of these creations makes my teeth hurt, but I’m planning to dust the icing pen down and have a go myself in time for Christmas. Particularly appealing are the ‘Cocktail Eggs’ with piped gelatine and mayonnaise in the centers…… does that call for a retro cocktail party??

Pharmacy packaging

Posted in Exhibitions, Other, Photos October 12th, 2009

Looking round Worcester Museum and Art gallery, I found some lovely examples of type on old Pharmacy packaging, I find it such a shame that packaging these days isn’t nearly so interesting or beautiful. I’m very tempted to start a collection of old bottles and packets as a reminder of how product design used to be.

Christmas Sock Monsters

Posted in Other December 28th, 2008

This is one of the very cool books I received off a friend for Christmas and I think it’s going to be a great way to use up some of my holey footwear. I’m really excited about posting up the results of some sock experiments in the near future.

Graham Rawle, The Wizard of Oz

Posted in Other, Publications December 19th, 2008

One of the books which I’ve put on my christmas wish list. I’m getting really excited about being able to read this. According to his website Graham Rawle has taken inspiration the original story by L. Frank Baum rather than the more familiar Film adaptation with red ruby slippers and Dorothy’s blue dress. I don’t think I’ve actually read the original book so it’ll be really interesting to see which parts the film chose to leave out. I also like the strange collages which Rawle has created as they seem much different to the more readily imagined images of the wizard of oz everyone gets into their heads.
